Written and directed by Damian Reid, The Vicar of Dibley Too! takes its cue from the popular TV show and faithfully repurposes four key episodes – featuring all of the show’s favourite characters – for the stage.

From the first awkward meeting between Geraldine and the Dibley parish committee to Geraldine’s star turn on BBC’s Songs of Praise, the villagers are gradually won over by Geraldine’s wit, humour, passion and love for her congregation.

The titular character of the show reflected a wider cultural shift taking place during the 1990’s, with women entering into traditional, male-dominated roles, including female ordained ministers in the Anglican church. Geraldine’s experiences with her congregation and the resistance to her presence by some parish elders were representative of some of the experiences of the first ordained woman priests in England. Reid comments, “With all the negativity in the world at the moment, I wanted to remind people of how love and acceptance can be a positive force for change. To me, The Vicar of Dibley was a ground-breaking TV show – taking a cultural issue happening at the same time and highlighting it through comedy, but also challenging its audience to question the status quo.”

Weaving together the themes of love, family and friendship, The Vicar of Dibley Too! breaks down traditional stereotypes with gentle humour. Geraldine’s intelligence and feisty nature helps to modernise the Dibley village – one parish council meeting at a time!
